The goat and the hare
The hare was growing cabbage in his garden. Every day he diligently watered the heads so they would
be juicy and crisp.
Around the little field walked a goat, greedily eyeing those delicacies. She was thinking how to get to them
without effort. From thought to deed was not far.
The next day the goat said to the hare: "Brother hare, I saw a wonderful young carrot at the city market.
Hurry quickly so they don't sell it out!"
The hare thanked politely and set off immediately. When he disappeared from sight, the goat opened the
gate and entered the garden. She immediately began feasting on the spot. What she didn't eat, she threw
into a large basket. Then she majestically walked away.
The hare returned home and was horrified. All his crop was gone. In the loose soil, he saw only footprints.
He immediately guessed who the uninvited visitor was. It made him want to cry.
Early in the morning, the goat walked by as usual. She glanced over the fence and seemingly lamented
sadly:
"Such a mess! Who could have done this? It must have been a sly thief!"
The hare kept silent. He knew the truth. He was hurt by that outrageous lie. But what could he do? The
goat was sturdy and, besides, had sharp horns. If he were to confront her, it would not end well.
He lowered his ears and sadly walked home.
The goat just laughed at how she outsmarted him. She bleated happily.
Her voice was heard by robbers wandering about the area.
They caught the goat, slaughtered her, roasted her on a spit, and ate her. They sold the skin at the
market.
From the tanned skin, a craftsman made a drum. The instrument was sold to a musician. He praised it
highly:
"It sounds wonderful! It has such a full sound. As if it hides a living soul inside!"
